Why Federer was impressed with Tsitsipas

Roger Federer remained impressed with Stefanos Tsitsipas after their match in Perth

Roger Federer and Stefanos Tsitsipas

Roger Federer won a high-quality match against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Perth during the Hopman Cup on Thursday.

The Swiss has already practiced with Stefanos in the past, but this was the first time that they played each other on a ‘semi-official’ match (the Hopman Cup is a ‘serious’ exhibition).

Eventually, Roger won the encounter 7-6 (5) 7-6 (4), and the Swiss Maestro remained very well impressed with the youngster.

Soon after the match, Roger commented

“He did a nice job. I think we both played well without too many mistakes.

I learned about his game. From my game, I didn’t learn anything.

For me, it’s about maintaining a good level of play. I’m happy where my game is at.

I was impressed with what I saw from Stefanos. I don’t like to put pressure on guys and call them out and say ‘watch out for him’ and then he’s got to be under that weight for the rest of his career.

I can only judge from this year what he did and what I saw looked very nice, so I think he’s going to be a top player for many years to come.”

Still work in progress, but great hearing that. Next step: the Australian Open.
