Federer criticizes IPTL rules

Roger Federer is one of the most traditional players around and he loves playing “classic tennis”.

At times the Maestro is too harsh against some innovations to even criticize the use of the eye-hawk for challenging calls (one of the best innovations in tennis history).

It was interesting to see Roger’s reaction to the various rules introduced by the ITPL. Even if Roger did shine in his debut (see article), he didn’t like something “My mind was scrambling trying to remember all the rules. It’s crazy, but it’s good fun.”

Roger on “ball toss penalty” …

Then Federer added “The one I think is most unnecessary here is when you start the motion and let’s say you miss the ball toss, that counts as a mistake. I think that’s probably most unnecessary. The way it is right now, I don’t think it will work as a Tour event. I’m very traditional and I like the way the game is on tour. I like the scoring system.”

… and applying these rules to the Tour

Roger doesn’t think that some of these rules should be applied to the official tour “It’s not going to replace how we play the tour but it definitely has a place in our sport to have more interaction, more fun, and different rules. You bend it, you customise it, and it works for everyone involved. It’s a very interesting concept.”

Roger had an inspiring debut in his first night agasint the Singapore Slammers to win mixed doubles with Mirza (6-0), men’s doubles with Bopanna (6-1) and singles 6-4 (against Berdych)
