Jannik Sinner’s coach Cahill explains what the Italian has to improve to become no.1

Jannik Sinner has the skills to become the best player in the world, but his coach Darren Cahill believes he still needs to make progress in key areas. He has already won the Open Sud de France and placed second at the Rotterdam Open, and has reached the quarterfinals of three Grand Slams.

Although Jannik Sinner has all the necessary skills to top the ATP Rankings, his coach Darren Cahill believes that the emerging star still needs to make some progress in a number of key areas. Following a successful debut season in 2020, the Italian was expected to achieve great things, with Novak Djokovic declaring in 2021 that “he has the potential to be a top player in the world.”

Sinner had a career-high rank of No. 9 in 2021 and has spent the previous year vacillating between the top 10 and top 20. While this year he has already won the Open Sud de France and placed second at the Rotterdam Open, last year he reached the quarterfinals of three Grand Slams and won the Croatia Open, upsetting the current world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

During a recent interview with the Italian outlet La Republica, Darren Cahill explained what Jannik Sinner has to do to become the best player in the world.

“He can improve his serve, his transition game; he can be dominant from the baseline. But the most important thing, when you train great players, is to keep improving their strengths,” said the Australian coach.

“Jannik moves incredibly well, so we spend a lot of time on that aspect. It’s great to see how he’s so willing to try new things and try to improve, as long as you don’t stray too far from the type of player he is,” he added.
