Stefanos Tsitsipas has brought attention to a “dangerous” reality that players must deal with as a result of an ATP Tour rule that is frequently disregarded. The Greek star, who entered the Miami Open complaining of injuries, was eliminated on Wednesday.

The third-ranked player in the world has recently struggled with a shoulder issue and hasn’t played well since the Australian Open before trying his “luck” in Indian Wells, where he lost in the opening match. Karen Khachanov defeated him to go to the quarterfinals. After losing their previous six encounters, it was the Russian’s first victory over Tsitsipas in his professional career. Khachanov also triumphed over a top-10 opponent for the first time since 2019.

Talking to Tennis Channel with Prakash Amritraj, Tsitsipas said: “There’s an ATP rule if you don’t play in a Masters 1000, they take away your best 1000 result of last year. You can’t add points. I had to play. You also get fined. It’s frustrating to have to think about this on top of your injury.”
