Sascha Zverev had a rather tough but successful opening match at the Hopman Cup against an extremely tricky David Ferrer on Sunday.

The Spaniard was supposed to have almost retired from tennis (see article), but on Sunday he showed that he is still in great shape. Eventually, Sascha won the match 6-4 4-6 7-6 (0) after a huge fight.

Soon after the match, Sascha commented

“All the credit to David, coming back from a set down and break down. He is the greatest fighter, maybe, that we have ever seen in tennis. What he has done in tennis over the past 15 or 20 years has been absolutely amazing.”

This match came after Angelique Kerber defeated Garbine Muguruza 6-2 3-6 6-3. Later on, Team Germany won also the mixed doubles 4-2 4-3 (3).

Sascha and Angelique will face Team France (Pouille and Cornet) the 2nd of January.
