1 weakness Federer has to fix

Roger Federer has been the one of the most interesting players on tour this year (ok that is not something new).  Roger has won 5 tournaments, he has reached 11 finals and he had concrete chances to claim the world no.1 status (see article).

The Maestro has achieved all of this by successfully adopting an aggressive tennis with the help of Edberg’s counseling and the adoption of a larger racket.  Roger is a great front-runner to win 91% of his service game (the best in 2014 after Karlovic and Raonic), but he has a huge weakness: his break points conversion.

BREAK POINTS CONVERSION

In 2014 Roger has converted just 39% break points and that is the same break points conversion of Milos Raonic (not the best returner in the game).  In 2014 Roger was only 24th in the stats of the best break points conversion.

Break Points Conversionin 2014

This is a huge problem for Roger that is often unable to get the most from his return games.

One of the reasons for his poor conversion rate could be that  most of the times he has the opportunity to convert break-points in the ad-court and Roger’s opponents are used to hammer his backhand return especially on that side. Another possible explanation is that the Maestro has the tendency to be over-aggressive when he has the opportunity to break.

Whatever the case this is something Roger needs to address.

After this rant on Roger’s ability to convert break points… we present here a video of some Federer’s incredible returns on Karlovic’s serve… just to remind who is Roger!
