Why Murray fired coach and trainer, not Mauremo?

These are quite interesting days for Andy Murray.

The former world no.2 has just announced he is now engaged with longtime girlfriend Kim Sears (see article) and he made another big move: he fired his coach and his trainer.

Murray’s 2014 was bad

It was clear that something had to change in Andy’s camp. The Scott had a horrible 2014 for his standards to even crash out from the top10 for a brief moment. Then Andy had a great end of the season to win 3 tournaments (Shenzhen, Vienna and Valencia) and finish the year as world no.6.

Changes

That was still not enough and it was time to make a move. Many were thinking that the most obvious change was to end Murray’s controversial partnership with Amelie Mauresmo, but things got to the other way with Murray firing his longtime friend and coach Daniel Vallverdu and his trainer Jez Green.

Daniel was a central figure for Murray as he was a critical link between the Scott and the other coaches. For example Ivan Lendl could not follow Andy much around the world, so he was often relating to Daniel in order to convey critical messages to Murray. Daniel became “redundant” after Amelie came on board as she agreed to spend at least 25 weeks on tour with him (much more than Ivan)

The communicate

It was Andy to disclose the news “A change surely is better for everyone. I thank Jez and Dani for the great work done and I wish them all the best with their future. I already started preparing for the new season and the Australian Open and I am very excited for the new year”.
