Baghdatis: I can be a top10 player in next 4 or 5 years

Marcos Baghdatis had his breakthrough year in 2006 when he surprised the tennis world by reaching the final at the Australian Open (defeated by Federer) and the semifinals in Wimbledon (defeated by Nadal). That allowed the Cypriot to reach a career high world no.8.

After that there was not much joy for Marcos that has even struggled to stay in the top20.  Now ranked no.85 Baghdatis feels he can have 4 or 5 good years ahead even if he is 29-year-old (King Roger is setting up new standards).

Marcos: I can break in the top10 …

Baghdatis has been struggling with a problem to his shoulder for some time, but apparently that can be a thing of the past.

During an interview with the Indian Newspaper “The Asian Age” Marcos commented “I think I have another 4-5 years in my body. The last two years I have been struggling with health problems and injuries so it’s been tough.

This year, towards the end of the year I am feeling better. I think I can finish the next year in the top 50 and in 4-5 years try and finish in the top 10”.

… I need to be more aggressive

Aggressiveness is key according to Marcos “I need to start being more aggressive again and start finding confidence. Because of the injury I lost a lot of confidence so it is tough to be aggressive when your body is letting you down a bit. I am going to try to get to the top 10. That’s the main goal for me so I can finally retire.”

After a horrific start of the season when the Cypriot has lost in the very early stages of the first 6 tournaments of the year, Marcos has found some joy winning 4 challengers (Nottingham, Vancouver, Aptos and Geneva).

Time now to face the big boys.
