Serena probably didn’t have the (very) best season of her incredible career, but at the end of the day she won 7 tournaments of which 1 slam (US Open) and the season finale in Singapore. The American also retained her top spot in the rankings with a decent gap (1435pts) over world no.2 Maria Sharapova. Serena ended the season with a 52-10 win/loss record.
All this feat allowed Williams to win the WTA Players of the Year for 6th time after 2002, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013.
Serena: I am humbled …
The world no.1 commented “I’m really grateful and humbled to receive this award. It’s been an amazing year.”
… I had many ups and downs
Then she added “It’s been a really difficult year for me. I don’t think I’ve had such an up and down year. I started out well with Brisbane; then didn’t do well in Australia; then I did well again in Miami. It was really up and down. I ended the year well. I had a couple injuries in the beginning of Asia, but I’m glad I came and I was able to end well. So I think that was important. How you start is how you finish, right?”
Now the world no.1 will go to Singapore where she will play Bhupathi’s IPTL for the Singapore Slammers.
