After losing their Indian Wells encounter, Emma Raducanu commended Iga Swiatek, using the word “ruthless” to characterize the Pole’s level of play. In the round of 16 at Indian Wells, top-seeded Swiatek defeated Raducanu 6-3, 6-1.
In the third game, Raducanu successfully saved two break points, but she also failed to capitalize on her first two opportunities in the fourth game. Swiatek made her first break of the match in the sixth game, and Pole held on to her serve the rest of the set to win the opening set. Raducanu served the first game in the second set after dropping the first set. Swiatek then completely dominated the remaining games of the match, making three consecutive breaks and winning six straight games to close out the second set in style.
Talking to BBC Sport, Raducanu commented: “I think that Iga played a very good level and showed why she is number one in the world. She was very ruthless with the way that she played. I think I was able to stay competitive for the beginning of the match but ultimately she ground me down and by the end of it I was just taking way too long to recover from one rally.”
