Matteo Berrettini is not having a great period on-court and some believe he is too distracted by his romantic life and new girlfriend Melissa Satta.
Starting over from the Phoenix Challenger is Matteo Berrettini. The Italian decides to take a modest step backwards to rebuild confidence after the stinging setbacks of this beginning of 2023, the last one in chronological order being the elimination in the first round at Indian Wells at the hands of world number 103 Taro Daniel.
Both those who have opposed his decision and those who have found it concerning have voiced their opinions. There is no denying that it can be advantageous to defuse tension occasionally. So why such a drastic fall, exactly? Certainly, as Berrettini asserted in an interview with Paolo Rossi of the Italian newspaper Repubblica, the love life, and particularly the new relationship with the well-known showgirl Melissa Satta, has nothing to do with it.
Berrettini commented: “Personally I am a reserved person, but I knew that by choosing someone from the world of entertainment I would attract the spotlight. However, I don’t think it’s a fault to be followed and photographed. I live a love story like any 26-year-old and I’m sorry that a positive thing like a feeling is interpreted as a professional distraction. The thing that hurts me the most is not the comments of the haters, but those of the people who know about tennis. I cannot understand the reason for these criticisms.”
