The seventh-seeded Holger Rune was defeated by the 37-year-old Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5 in a dramatic third-round upset at Indian Wells in a match replete with drama, anger, and head games.
For the first time since the 2020 Rolex Paris Masters, the 100th-ranked Wawrinka has won three straight matches in a Masters 1000 competition. Yet, the match’s conclusion did not mark the end of this conflict.
Infuriated that Wawrinka had referred to him as “a baby” in their previous match in Paris four months prior, the 19-year-old Rune called the tough Swiss out when they faced off at net today.
“You got nothing to say now? You got nothing to say now?” Rune said at the net.
Wawrinka replied: “What do you want me to say?”

LWWLWWWLLL Now ranked no.8 (career-high), the Dane played his last match on the 13th of March when he surrendered to world no.100 Stan Wawrinka 6-2 6-7(5) 7-5 in the 3rd round in Indian Wells (draw).
At the moment, during this season Rune achieved an overall 12-6 record. Holger Rune’s best performance of this year was reaching the semifinal in Montpellier and Acapulco.
Rune will play next in Miami (Miami Open). He will begin to play the tournament from the main draw that will commence on the 22nd of March.
