That was a Waterloo!
The French Team looked to be set to make a meal of Switzerland at the beginning of the week when Federer looked like a cripple; then things changed… dramatically.
Eventually Roger’s problem “gave” just a point to the French team that surprisingly enough couldn’t come up with a decent line-up.
Arnaud Clement wasn’t able to properly prepare this tie. He had many great players to pick among Tsonga, Monfils, Simon, Gasquet, Benneteau and Roger-Vasselin… but it seems that none of them (but Gael) was ready for it.
Arnaud is facing lots of criticism at home for not having uncovered Tsonga’s injury to the elbow and for picking Gasquet as his substitute. Richard was completely unprepared in both doubles and singles to “give” 2 easy and decisive points to Switzerland.
Clement: I will question myself
The Frenchman commented ”As captain, I will, of course, think about it. I will question myself and think about how I could have been better strategically before the tie, during the training sessions, and during the matches. I need to be better in the future. But for the time being, the first feeling is that Switzerland was better than we were during the whole weekend.”
Probably Clement can be questionable for not making Simon playing against Tsonga (Simon defeated Wawrinka in Shanghai last month), but it is always easy to comment after you know the result… isn’t it?
