Roger Federer has famously coached Sascha Zverev during the last edition of the Laver Cup saying to the German that he was playing too far back in the court when playing Anderson.
Interesting enough, Mark Philippoussis had the same exact comment about why Sascha Zverev is not performing that well during Slams.
In fact, the German has already won 3 Master ATP1000 and the ATP Finals, but he really struggles to go deep in the majors.
PRICELESS. Federer coaches Zverev saying why he needs not to be pushed back
Why Zverev is not winning slams. PHILIPPOUSSIS
During a recent interview, the Australian commented
“He hasn’t done it in Grand Slams yet. He’s far from doing it at Grand Slams. His game is staying back on the baseline, and that’s no problem but when you’ve got seven best-of-five-set matches to win you need to, you know, kind of get through that first week without working as hard.
In my opinion, he just stays three or four feet too far back behind that baseline, and he’s just doing a lot of work. That’s fine in the best-of-three sets, the tournaments that he’s winning three or four of this year but in Grand Slams it’s just a different story.”
Good point from the Australian. In fact, it’s clear that Zverev is trying to be more aggressive also going more and more in the net. It’s work in progress, and Ivan Lendl is definitely the right person to help in this.
