Federer may play doubles if…

That’s a bit strange.

Roger Federer has been recovering from his back injury to say that he is now ready even to play doubles with Wawrinka.

Roger’s back problem has always been strange. Usually as soon as he gets rid of the inflammation the back gets better and better. The problem for Roger is also to adapt his movements to his back.

The world no.2 didn’t have a glorious match in the first day to lose 6-1 6-4 6-3 to a great Gael Monfils. The Swiss was clearly slower than usual and we were wondering if he was fit even to play the second single on Sunday. Surprise, surprise… he can even play doubles!

Roger: I feel I can play proper tennis

The Maestro commented “I’ll definitely make myself available [for doubles] if I feel that I can play proper tennis, which at the end I was able to do. As the match went on, I just started to loosen up. I guess I needed to hit 30 big serves, I needed to slide, I needed to be in defence, I needed to play offensive tennis. It was a proper match, and Gaël did play well.”

The Options: Wawrinka/Chiudinelli the best?

The Swiss captain Severin Luthi has now a big dilemma. In fact, his best doubles would be Federer-Wawrinka, but they have lost their last 4 Davis Cup matches and that could make them tired for Sunday. In addition you do not want to risk Roger’s back any further.

Another option would be to make Wawrinka playing with Chiudinelli. The last one would be Chiudinelli/Lammer… but we can’t see them winning it.

On the other side we should have Benneteau and Gasquet.. and this is not an easy double.

That is going to be interesting…probably Wawrinka/Chiudinelli is the best one considering that Stan looks quite fit, he played amazing tennis against Tsonga and he didn’t spend many energies in the first match.
