Emma Raducanu, the former 2021 US Open winner, disclosed that she removed WhatsApp and Instagram from her phone in an effort to “live under her own little rock” in response to online criticism. The British women’s No. 1 deactivated the social media applications after her loss at the Australian Open in January, defeating Danka Kovinic to go to the second round in Indian Wells.

With 2.5 million followers, the 20-year-old tennis player is the fifth most popular user on Instagram, just behind the “big three” stars Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios, and Naomi Osaka. But this rigorous examination can be taxing, especially for a player who was catapulted into the limelight as a result of Raducanu’s historic US Open victory in 2021.

After making a splash on the tennis scene throughout the world a year and a half ago, Raducanu has partnered with a number of high-profile companies, including Tiffany & Co., Dior, British Airways, and Evian.

In an interview with The Times, Raducanu revealed that the decision she made was motivated by a period when she merely wanted to “zone in” on herself.

“After [deleting the social media], I’ve just been living under my own little rock,’ Raducanu commented.

“Sometimes you just go through some patches where you feel like you just want to zone in on yourself. I was very content with my life, what I was doing with it.”

I think that [negativity] is part of social media. I feel that it affects you, but I’ve just learned regardless of what you do – if you do good, if you do bad – people are going to come at you regardless. Now it doesn’t really bother me so much and I don’t really let it affect me.”
