Roger Federer has been the surprising conqueror of the last two editions of the Australian Open. The Swiss Maestro won in 2017 after a magnificent comeback and over his nemesis Rafael Nadal following a passionate final that ended up in an epic 5-sets fight.
This year “King Roger” had a much smoother run after he reached the final without dropping a single set on the way. The final was much tougher than any other prior match as Cilic looked in firm control at the beginning of the 5th set, but eventually the Swiss found the solution to conquer his 20th slam.
Who is going to win the Australian Open in 2019?
Even if Roger has won the last two editions, he is not going to be the hot favorite to win the “happy slam” because of his age (37) and the fact that the field is becoming more and more competitive. Let’s have a look at who will have a shot at this upcoming Australian Open.
Djokovic
Nole had a fantastic run in the second part of this year to end the season as the deserving world no.1 following his titles in Wimbledon, Cincinnati, the US Open, and the Shanghai Masters. The “Serbinator” also reached the finals in Bercy and London for the Season’s finale.
Zverev
Sascha has surprised the tennis world after he won the ATP Finals after dismissing Novak Djokovic in straight sets. The 21-year-old impressed for both his tennis and personality giving the impression that he was in full control of the situation. The German is already tipped to win multiple slams starting from next year, and his partnership with Ivan Lendl will be pivotal to achieve that.
Cilic
Marin has reached two slam finals in the last two years. In 2017, he lost to Roger Federer in Wimbledon a rather mediocre final after succumbing to an injury. This year Marin was defeated in the Australian Open final also by the Swiss Maestro after giving the impression to be in charge at the beginning of the 5th
set. Currently ranked no. 7, Marin has now the experience to win the all thing in Melbourne.Anderson
The South African has also reached two slam finals in the last two years. In 2017 he lost in straight sets to Rafael Nadal in the US Open final. This year he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final also in straight sets, but the impressed after beating Federer in the quarters recovering from a 0-2 sets deficit.
Nadal
Rafa is among the favorites by definition, but the King of Clay is struggling more and more on hard courts. This year he withdrew from every single competition on this specific surface with the exception of Toronto that he ended up winning.
So… who is the favorite?
Djokovic may be no.1, and that is also confirmed by Australian Open betting websites. However, even if many consider Federer and Nadal as the favorites no.2, it’s possible that Zverev will surprise anyone and again.
Game on!
