Roger Federer was once again too much for Milos Raonic.

The Swiss Maestro was back to full of confidence to never lose control of the match. After winning a comfortable opening set 6-1 (2 breaks for King Roger), the Swiss had to face a much more combative Raonic in the second. Roger had to cope with a couple of awkward service games in the second set when he saved 4 break points (one of those was a set point), but besides that he didn’t have major problems to get to a tie-break that he won with a comfortable 7-0. The match ended 6-1 7-6 (0) in just 89 minutes.

Some Numbers

There are 3 key numbers here. The first is Raonic’s aces as the Canadian blasted “only” 10 aces (vs. 22 of their previous match in Paris); the second is Raonic’s first serve in (only 46%); the third is a good break point conversion from Roger (finally!) that has won 4 breaks on 6 occasions.

Federer: I played very well from 1 set and half

Roger commented “I think I played really well for probably one and a half sets. It was good to get off to a good start like I did against him at Cincinnati and Wimbledon. I broke in the first game and sort of never looked back.

Thankfully he didn’t play quite so well like he did in Paris. He gave me a few shots here and there, especially at the beginning of the breaker. I think those were crucial. I was happy to bring it home because it was very close at the end of the second.”

Roger now leads Raonic 7-1 in head to head matches.  The Maestro will play Nishikori on Tuesday, head to head is 2-2, 1-0 for Federer on indoor hard courts.
