In a nail-biting second-round thriller at the Australian Open early on Friday morning, Andy Murray defeated local favorite Thanasi Kokkinakis in one of his greatest comebacks. Despite trailing by two sets and 2-5 to a tenacious Kokkinakis, the 35-year-old British player miraculously came back to win 4-6, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-3, 7-5 in five hours and forty-five minutes.
Currently, this match at the Australian Open is the second-longest in the Open Era, trailing only the 2012 contest between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal by eight minutes. Andy Murray expressed his satisfaction with himself in his on-court interview following the victory, saying that it was amazing how he was able to turn the situation around and adding that he had a “big heart.”
“I don’t know. It was, yeah, unbelievable that I managed to turn that round. Thanasi was playing unbelievable. I did start playing better as the match went on. And yeah, I have a big heart,” Murray said.
