Emma Raducanu starts her Australian Open campaign in the best possible way after dismissing Tamara Korpatsch 6-3 6-2 to set up a tasty 2nd round match vs. Cori Gauff.
While Raducanu was armed with the knowledge that she had won their previous match, which was played on clay in Stuttgart last April, she also had a strapping on the left ankle she injured in Auckland. If the British player hadn’t played so few matches since the fall and been restricted in her preparations here, there should have been little to worry about.
The first of Raducanu’s four breaks, which she won despite her awkward delivery but was promptly given back, started a rather chaotic first set. The 20-year-old Kent player combined groundstroke victories with a few mistakes to get to 3-1 before being drawn back to even again. When she took the ball early to drive through the court, she found plenty of pop on her serve and sprinted ahead to win the set.
These were the flashes of the player who won the US Open; she was moving reasonably well, though her backhand launch appeared to be a little compromised. The set was won with a fantastic forehand pass. Raducanu, who appeared to have everything under control at 3-0, would go on to win six straight games. Korpatsch put up some stiffer resistance by slicing the ball with larger and flatter cuts.
But it was always obvious who was the better player, and Raducanu won on her second match point after breaking serve six times to end the match without any drama.
