After an incredible US Open where Serena defeated everybody by conceding not more than 3 games per set, the American was widely expected to have another triumphant at the Wuhan Open.
The world no.1 was facing once again Alize Cornet that has upset her already twice in 2014. Serena was leading 6-5 when she had to retire for a viral illness.
After the match the American released an apologetic statement “I’m sorry to all the fans in Wuhan that I had to retire from my match against Alizé today. I felt dizzy and nauseous in the first set and unfortunately couldn’t continue. But the tournament organizers have done an amazing job preparing the facilities for this year’s event. I really hope to come back to the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open in 2015.”
Serena is still scheduled to play the China Open next week in Beijing.
