There have been a couple of things that shocked the Spanish Davis Cup team recently… let’s say more than a couple.
First Spain lost the play-off against Brazil 3-1 after most of the top players didn’t bother to participate (Andujar and Bautista-Agut were representing Spain). Then the captain Carlos Moya resigned after only 1 (very unsuccessful) year and now the Spanish Federation appointed a woman, Gala Leon Garcia, to lead the team in 2015.
From Toni Nadal
Toni Nadal was surprised by the appointment of Gala Leon Garcia to comment “it is preferable that (the Davis Cup captain) is someone with a background in the world of men’s tennis. The men’s game isn’t the same as the women’s game, on the tactical level.
I have had zero relations with Gala Leon and I believe Rafa Nadal also zero, he has never mentioned it to me. But it doesn’t matter, I have never spoken to her but that doesn’t mean anything. It would seem to be more normal if the captain had been someone like Juan Carlos Ferrero, or some ex-player of a certain level, which is what has happened recently.”
This is the first time that a woman leads a Davis Cup team. Probably this is becoming a sort of trend after Murray appointed Amelie Mauresmo as his coach (and that wasn’t so successful as well).
congrats to Gala Leon Garcia for becoming first female Spanish Davis cup captain today… hopefully first of many!
