As his Spanish team gets ready for the second day of a dead tie against Australia, Rafael Nadal has called for an overhaul of the newly formed United Cup competition.

The new teams’ tournament made its debut this season in Sydney, Perth, and Brisbane, but it has turned out to be more of a miss than a hit due to player withdrawals, a confusing schedule, and ties that have no bearing on the outcome. Nadal spoke up about the format on his own after losing in three sets to Australian Alex de Minaur in a match that didn’t matter much because Great Britain had already advanced from the group after two victories.

Rafa stated that he likes the overall idea of the United Cup, but something has to be adjusted.

Rafa commented:

“Putting things in perspective (for) this competition, I find a negative point. Competition is great. Idea is great. It’s not great that today we are playing for nothing. It’s the first year of this competition, so that’s the kind of thing that we need to fix, to improve, and to make it more interesting for everyone.”
