Nick Kyrgios stunned his teammates after abruptly retiring from the United Cup just a few hours before the start of the event, citing an ankle injury. Lleyton Hewitt, the captain of Team Australia, was also surprised by this late retirement. He also said that there was a complete lack of communication from Kyrgios’s side.
Lleyton was not happy also because Nick’s behavior had a profound impact on other people. Hewitt commented: “If it was just Nick, that’s one thing, but when it revolves around the team and other people and I guess their preparation for, you know, they want to be playing as well as they possibly can, not just in this event but also leading into the Australian Open, so, yeah, that’s probably the hardest thing.”
When I asked about what could have been done to avoid this useless drama, Hewitt commented: “Probably just responding [to my messages]. That’s the normal way of doing it.”
