At 42 years of age, Venus Williams will be part of the Australian Open main draw thanks to a wild card offered by Tennis Australia.

25 years after making her tournament debut, the American will return to Melbourne for the tournament, which gets underway on January 16. Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, she lost in the 2003 and 2017 Australian Open finals.

I am very excited to be returning to Melbourne. It will be an honour to play for the fans again,” said Williams.

“I’ve been competing in the country for over 20 years now and the Australian community has always supported me wholeheartedly. I’m looking forward to making more memories at the tournament this year.”

About Serena Williams…

It is unclear if Serena Williams will try to give another shot at the Australian Open. In theory, the American legend has retired after playing the US Open. However, she clearly stated that she might stage a sensational comeback in the future.
