Juan Carlos Ferrero talks about the recent challenge that Carlos Alcaraz had to face after becoming the new world number 1

Carlos Alcaraz And His Coach

Carlos Alcaraz had an outstanding 2022, winning his first slam at the US Open, and also becoming the youngest world number 1 in history. Even though Alcaraz said that he didn’t feel any pressure after topping the rankings, his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, admitted that he had to adjust to his new role as the leader of the ATP Rankings.

“After the US Open it was difficult to adapt to his new role on the tour for him,” said Ferrero.

Juan Carlos Ferrero was himself the world number 1, and he is very well aware of how difficult it is to have a target behind his back. He gave all sorts of hints to Carlito on how to cope with his new status, but eventually the youngster had to feel it on his skin. “I was talking to him about how he had to manage everything but I think he needed to feel and to live it, go to a tournament and feel that pressure of being No 1, playing matches being No 1,” he added.
