Taylor Fritz won Diriyah Tennis Cup after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final 7-6(5) 7-6(3). The American player was understandably extremely happy with his performance also because winning this trophy meant also pocketing $1,000,000.
In the final, Fritz had nine break points, but he was able to save all of them, while Medvedev had none. How did he triumph? In two tiebreaks, they were pretty similar. For considerable stretches of the match, Medvedev was the superior player, particularly in the opening set when Fritz barely managed to hang on.
In the first set tiebreak, things took a dramatic turn when Medvedev blew a 1-0 lead and then made a costly double fault. Once the tiebreak began, he just completely lost his focus. In the second set, the same thing occurred, with Fritz once more outperforming Medvedev in the tiebreak.
Soon after the match, the American number 1 posted the following message on social media.
