Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, received the MBE designation from King Charles on Tuesday at Windsor Castle. The 20-year-old received the award for her contributions to tennis. Nevertheless, it seems that not everyone agreed with the recognition.

Danny Murphy, a former Liverpool player, questioned Raducanu’s merit for an MBE, saying she merely carried out her duties.

Why Emma Raducanu does not deserve the m by

Simply stating that Raducanu fulfilled her obligation to play tennis, Murphy clarified his position that others should typically be commended for going above and beyond. In an interview with Talksport, Murphy said he thought it was strange: “I find it bizarre that

someone would get an award for doing their job, and even if you do it very well. If you did get an award where you did give services to a sport and then afterward you’ve finished and you used that platform to help others.”
