Judy Murray is a rather popular figure in the UK. The mother of Andy and Jamie Murray agreed to hold tennis classes for girls in Saudi Arabia during the controversial Diriyah Tennis Cup.
The competitions drew harsh criticism from people who questioned the nation’s record on human rights, particularly their attitude toward women. Murray will be present to make certain that everyone is given an equal chance.
Knowing that many people do not appreciate this event, Judy released a long statement explaining her participation.
“Throughout my involvement in tennis, I have championed the cause of giving as many people as possible the opportunity to try tennis and to fall in love with it the way I have, and the way Jamie and Andy have.
I am particularly keen to ensure girls and women are given an equal opportunity to enjoy and experience tennis, whether for fun, for fitness or for friendship. Tennis enables all of that and while it is a global sport that has produced some of the greatest sportspeople of our time, it is also, at the same time, a community where everyone can connect.”
That is the message I have relayed throughout my time as a coach and as a champion for workforce development: we need to remove barriers to participation but also to ensure we can sustain growth in participation and ensure that the community can unite to showcase how special tennis can be, regardless of age, gender or ability,
