Denis Shapovalov defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-2, 6-4 in the opening singles match to avenge his semi-final loss. Felix Auger-Aliassime, the sixth-ranked player in the world, defeated Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-4 to give Canada an unstoppable 2-0 lead.
The emotions are difficult to explain, according to Auger-Aliassime. “All of us here – we’ve dreamed of this moment. It’s really a dream come true.” This was only their second Davis Cup final appearance for Team Canada. Their final match, in 2019, ended in a loss to Rafael Nadal’s Spain, but on Sunday, 109 years after the tournament’s inception, they defeated 28-time champions Australia to win the tennis World Cup.
