Roger Federer wins an incredible match against Gael Monfils at the US Open quarters.

The Maestro had to recover from 2 sets down and the situation got incredibly complicated in the fourth set when he faced 2 consecutive match points on his serve when he was 4-5 15-40 down. Roger just went for it to save both MPs and then hold the service game. At that point Monfils disappeared and the Maestro won 11 of the following 13 games. The final result was 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 6-2.  The match ended after 3 hours and 20 minutes.

This is the 9th time Roger has managed to recover from a 0-2 deficit. This is Federer’s 9th semis at the Flushing Meadows, the 1st since 2011.

Federer: I felt great in the fifth

“I still thought the finish line was far for Gael. I knew I could play better tennis. I got off to a good start, so I was actually feeling alright, but then when I was down two match points, that’s when I wasn’t feeling so great anymore. I thought, ‘This is it. This is last point, man. Just go down fighting, don’t miss an easy shot and let him have it. It’s fine.’

But I served well and stayed in the match and somehow turned it around. I felt great in the fifth, though. I was really starting to play better and better as the match went on, and that’s a great feeling.”

Next vs. Cilic

Roger will play Marin Cilic in the semifinal. Head to head is 5-0 for the Maestro that has dropped just 1 set against Marin in their encounters. Roger is the hot favorite for the final.
