Kei Nishikori wasn’t even sure to play this US Open. The Japanese had just undergone an operation to his foot to remove a cyst and he was unprepared for this major. Luckily Kei decided to give it a shot, and this shot… was huge.
Nishikori reaches his first semifinal in a major after defeating Wawrinka 3-6 7-5 7-6 (7) 6-7 (5) 6-4 in 4 hours and 15 minutes. This is the first time Nishikori has beaten two top 10 players back to back (in the quarters he defeated Raonic).
Nishikori: I played well
Kei commented “I started a little bit tight, but my play was okay. As the match went on, I was feeling more and more confident, especially in the third set. I don’t know how I finished the game, but I’m very happy. I feel amazing, playing well. It’s my favorite Grand Slam. Hopefully I can play 100 per cent tennis in the next round.”
