Roger Federer ends his match against Cilic after a huge and unnecessary struggle.
The Maestro was very close to win the match in the second set when he squandered 6 match points while leading 7-6 5-4. After wasting his chances in the second set Roger had to battle in the third. The Maestro finally managed to break Cilic in the 9th game (5-4) to win the match 7-6 (5) 6-7 (3) 6-4.
Some numbers
Once again Roger squandered too many opportunities in a match he could have won in straight sets. The Maestro wasted 6 match points in the second sets and he was able to convert just 1break point on 10 opportunities. Finally Roger scored 127 points vs. Cilic’s 124. Probably the worst number is the amount of time spent on court (2h and 36 minutes). Roger may pay for it in the following rounds. Match Stats.
Roger: I am happy I have found the way
Federer commented “It’s nice winning those kinds of matches, because I also lost a bunch in my career. Especially this season I have lost some closer ones, especially in the stretch from Indian Wells, Miami, Monaco, Rome, Paris. So from that standpoint I’m very happy I came through tonight. I thought Marin played really well, especially for longer periods,” Federer added. “I’m happy I was able to find a way tonight.”
Next vs. Ferrer
Roger will play David Ferrer. Head to head is 14-0 for the Swiss. Federer is the overwhelming favorite for getting to the semifinals also if you consider that Ferrer is not playing at his very best. The only question mark is Roger’s fitness after such a long match against Cilic.
