Mayer upsets Ferrer to win the title in Hamburg

World no.46 Leonardo Mayer wins his maiden title in Hamburg. The Argentine played a remarkable tournament to get to the final without conceding a single set.

In the last match Leonardo had to face one of the best clay court specialists, David Ferrer, to lose the opener at the tiebreak. Everything looked to point at a straight set victory for the Spaniard that instead crumbled in the second set (6-1). In the decider Mayer wasn’t able to finish off the match while he was serving for the championship (5-4), but eventually Leonardo grabbed his first title at the tie break. The final score was 6-7 (3) 6-1 7-6 (4).

Mayer:  I have all my strength

The Argentine was absolutely jubilant after the match “I can’t believe it. I was able to do it against Ferrer, who is one of the best players on this surface. I’m really happy and it still hasn’t sunk in that I won. At the start of the match, I was a little tense. But I relaxed and started to play better. He also made some mistakes that got me back into the match. I tried to enjoy it and that’s why I won, I think.

I wasn’t the top favourite, but I gave it all my strength, power and energy because I absolutely wanted to win.”
