Marta Kostyuk lost a rather straightforward match against Victoria Azarenka (6-2 6-3). Unfortunately, the two tennis players do not enjoy a good relationship. Marta is from Ukraine while Vika is from Belarus. It is well-known that Belarus has been helping Russia in its despicable invasion of Ukraine.
Vika Azarenka is a lovely character and she was extremely vocal against the war soon after the invasion started. She wanted to participate in a recent event held at the US Open to raise funds for Ukraine. Unfortunately, she wasn’t allowed apparently for the opposition of some Ukrainian players.
After the match, it was clear that Marta didn’t want to shake hands with Vika “conceding” just a racket tap.
This is absolutely ridiculous and not the right way to promote peace.
