Angelique Kerber will not play US Open this year for the best possible reason. The German champion announced that she is pregnant and therefore, she will take a long break from the sport. This was Angelique’s message on Twitter.

New York has often been a turning point in my career and it feels like this year will be no different in some way! From restarting my career in 2011 to winning the title in 2016 and becoming #1 in the world… the @usopen have a special place in my heart and I wish I could have said goodbye to all of you on court before not being around on tour for a while.

Ranked no.52, the German played her last match on the 1st of July when she surrendered to world no.32 Elise Mertens 6-4 7-5 in the 3rd round in Wimbledon (draw).
