Karen Khachanov did it!
The Russian defeated Novak Djokovic in the final 7-5 6-4 playing a great tennis and taking advantage of the fact that the soon-to-be world no.1 looked spent after he won a 3 hours’ semifinal against Roger Federer the day before.
The match
It was clear from the very beginning that Djokovic didn’t really recover from the marathon he endured the day before since the Serb was gasping already after few games. However, Nole is not a living legend by chance, and he tried to be with Khachanov as much as he could. The world no.1 has even managed to get an early break (3-1), but he conceded his serve soon after (3-2). The battle went deep into the set and the Russian conquered the decisive break in the 11th game (6-5) before winning 7-5.
The Russian was getting stronger and stronger in the second set. He broke Djokovic in the 3rd game (2-1), and with the exception of a tough hold in the 7th game (4-3), he has never conceded more than 1 point per service game. Eventually, Karen won the match 7-5 6-4.
This is Karen’s 4th career title, the 3rd of this season and by far the most important one.
