Novak Djokovic had a good start of his Paris campaign after a straight-sets win over the world no.48 Joao Sousa.
The world no.2 was already enjoying a rather good H2H record against the Portuguese (5-0) and he was the hot favorite to get to the next round.
The match
The Serb broke Sousa already in the 4th game (3-1) before consolidating his lead (4-1). The only awkward moment for Djokovic was when he lost unexpectedly his serve at love in the 7th game (4-3). The couple started to engage in a fierce battle, but it was Djokovic to take off to win 7 consecutive games to convert a 5-5 scoreline in a strong 7-5 5-0 lead. Nole sealed the deal after holding a complicated final game after saving 3 break points. The final score was 7-5 6-1 in 1 hour and 33 minutes.
I chose the right shots. DJOKOVIC
Even if this wasn’t a memorable performance from Nole, he was still happy with the win to comment
“In the important moments, I managed to get the right shots in play. Not 100 percent pleased with my game, I missed a lot of shots from the back of the court. But at the end of the day, it’s the first match, so it takes a bit of time to adjust.”
Next vs. Dzumhur
Nole will face the world no.52 Damir Dzumhur in the 3rd round. They have never played each other so far.
