Great Federer reaches the Basel

Roger plays a great match against Medvedev to win in straight sets in just over an hour. VIDEO

Federer Medvedev

Roger Federer is getting better and better in Basel.

Earlier in the week, the Swiss sensation was struggling to “understand” the conditions of the court (very fast with low bounces) to win a couple of “awkward” matches. Eventually, Roger had to use his vast experience to get through and reach the semifinal and play an in-form Daniil Medvedev.

The semifinal

Roger had an amazing start of the match. In fact, soon after he saved a break point in the very first game, he won the opening set 6-1 in just 19 minutes!

The second set looked to have a similar script after the Swiss won the first 4 games (4-0). From that moment, Medvedev decided to adopt a much better strategy to play “over-aggressively” not only from the baseline but also with continuous runs at the net. That paid the dividends in the sense that he could offer some opposition. The Russian had a gigantic hold in the 7th game (5-2) after he saved 2 match points with the first one happening after only 47 minutes of play! After holding, Medvedev broke the Swiss for the first time at love in the 8th game (5-3) before holding his serve soon after (5-4).  When things started to look a bit awkward for Federer, the Swiss held his serve to win 6-1 6-4 in just 64 minutes.

Federer Medvedev highlightsIt was a good match

After the match, Roger commented

“It was a very good win for me; I’d rate it at eight out of 10. I was feeling good on court apart from closing it out; I had a few errors there. He finished late last night and maybe his legs were a bit heavy. I was able to use my experience today.”

The final vs. Copil

Roger will have an unexpected opponent in his 14th final in Basel as he will face the world no.93 Marius Copil that starting this event from the qualifications, he defeated on his way top players such as Marin Cilic and Sascha Zverev. Roger and Marius have played each other so far.
