Elina Svitolina is having a fantastic run in Singapore where she is leading her group following two wins over Petra Kvitova (6-3 6-3) and Kristina Pliskova.
The match against Pliskova
Elina and Karolina had an interesting start. In fact, after splitting the first 2 games, they engaged in a marathon 3rd game that ended after 15 minutes with the Ukrainian holding after 10 deuces! Later on, Elina conquered the decisive break in the 6th game (4-2) before winning the opener 6-3.
Karolina fought back in style in the 2nd second after she conquered 4 consecutive games from a 2-2 scoreline to win the set 6-2.
In the decider, it was time for Svitolina to win 4 consecutive games and grab a strong 4-0 lead. However, the Czech refused to fold, and she broke the Ukrainian to get closer in the scoreline (4-2). That was the start of 4 consecutive breaks from each side, and eventually, it was Svitolina to win the encounter 6-3 2-6 6-3.
What was the key to winning the match
After the encounter, Elina explained what was her objective
“My goal was to make an extra ball over the net and fight until the very end and for every point, to don’t give any easy errors. I think this was the key today. It worked really good, because I think Karolina was up and down and struggling sometimes with her serve. I had to be ready to take my chances. That’s why I’m very happy with that.
It was a really challenging opening match, and this one, as well, so I’m very happy that I could handle those two, and I still have my next match very, very tough and, you know, I’m looking forward to it.”
Svitolina is now leading the White Group, and she needs only 1 set to qualify.
