19 year-old Madison Key surprises everyone to win the Premier event in Eastbourne

We didn’t see that coming.

World no. 47 Madison Key won a glorious tournament in Eastbourne fighting in a draw full of stars (Radwanska, Kvitova, Jankovic, Kerber, Pennetta, Errani and Wozniacki). Madison took full advantage of some early casualties to find her way in the draw.

The final against Kerber was very tense and absolutely even with just 3 breaks in total (one per set), After exchanging the first 2 sets, Madison won the decisive game at the very end of the third when she broke Angelique to grab her first career title.

Some Numbers

The big number is Madison’s aces count: 17! This was a huge help for the American and definitely something that was missing in Kerber’s game as the German wasn’t able to fire a single ace! What Madison didn’t do that well was in her break point conversion (only 2 out of 11) while Kerber converted 1 out of 4. Match Stats.

Key: My serve was a weapon

A jubilant Madison Key admitted that “My serve was definitely a weapon today, and it really helped me the entire time. She raised her level so much in the second set and started playing really well, and I really had to get more aggressive and not be as passive. After that second set I just went for it, and it worked today.

I have always loved grass. To win my first title on grass is just an amazing experience.”

Madison will now head to Wimbledon where she is going to face a dangerous Monica Puig in the opener.
