Elina Svitolina and Karolina Pliskova are leading the White Group in Singapore after winning their opening matches on Sunday in straight sets.
Svitolina
Ranked no. 6, Elina lost 4 of her last 6 encounters before Singapore. However, the Ukrainian played a great match against Petra Kvitova (world no. 7). The only awkward moment for Elina was when she was broken back in the second game of the 1st set (1-1) after she broke herself Kvitova in the very first game.
Later on, there was an important moment when Svitolina won 5 consecutive games to reverse a 2-3 deficit in a 6-3 1-0 lead.
The only difference between the 2 players in the 2nd set was a break in favor of Elina in the 6th game (4-2). That was before the world no.6 won the match 6-3 6-3.
Pliskova
Ranked no.5, Karolina had a surprisingly smooth ride against the top seed and defending champion Caroline Wozniacki. After saving 2 consecutive break points in the in the 2nd game (15-40), the Czech broke the Dane twice before getting a decisive 5-1 lead and then win the opener 6-2.
Pliskova started the 2nd set in the best possible way with another break. Wozniacki was having continuous problems in holding her serve, and she had to save a couple of match points on serve when she was 3-5 down. Carolina had also her chances to get back in the match in the following game (4-5) when Pliskova was facing 2 consecutive break points (15-40), but once more it was the world no.5 to hold her nerve, win the following 4 points and the match. The finals result was 6-2 6-4.
