Wimbledon introduces tie-break at 12-12

TIE-BREAK.The Championships will not witness anymore a marathon match.

Isner Mahut Wimbledon marathon

There has been an on-going debate if it was right for Wimbledon not to have a tiebreak in the 5th set.

In fact, given the nature of grass, we have been witnessing huge marathons over the years. The most notable one was the famous Isner-Mahut match that was played over 3 days with the American winning 70-68 in the 5th set.

Last year we had another couple of marathons such as the semifinal won by Anderson over Isner (again) 26-24 in the 5th set that followed the previous quarter that the South African won over Roger Federer 13-11 at the decider.

The decision

Finally, the Wimbledon organization decided to introduce the tie-breaks also in the 5th set, but only when the scoreline is 12-12.

The club’s chairperson Philip Brook commented

Lawn Tennis Club announced on Friday.

“Our view was that the time had come to introduce a tie-break method for matches that had not reached their natural conclusion at a reasonable point during the deciding set.

While we know the instances of matches extending deep into the final set are rare, we feel that a tie-break at 12-12 strikes an equitable balance between allowing players ample opportunity to complete the match to advantage, while also providing certainty that the match will reach a conclusion in an acceptable timeframe.”

That’s an interesting one.
