Roger Federer is more and more the King of Grass. The Swiss legend wins his 7th title in Halle (in 9 finals) after defeating a very good Falla.
In the final Roger hasn’t been as sharp as he was in the semi against Nishikori, but that was good enough. Roger was 1 break up and he was immediately broken back in both sets to have to play 2 tiebreaks. The Maestro was in full control in both breakers to win 7-6 (2) 7-6 (3).
Roger wasn’t very aggressive this time. The Swiss didn’t go to the much as much as the previous games, but his baseline tennis was rock solid.
Some numbers
The match lasted 1 hour and 28 minutes with Roger firing “only” 5 aces, but winning 82% of the points on his first serve. Federer won 82 points vs. Falla’s 69.
This is Roger’s 79 career title, the second of the year. More to come?
Roger: I really enjoy winning titles
Federer commented “It is great to have won seven times here. It is very special and I hope to come back here next year, where it is a 500-series event.
I really enjoy winning titles. It is what I play for, to play and receive a standing ovation at the end. I am very pleased with my performance. I work hard and travel the tour to win these titles and not lose in the quarters or semi-finals. With all the success I have had in the past, I need to aim for titles. I think I deserved the title this week.”
The good point is that when Roger pays well in Halle he usually has a good Wimbledon. Can the history repeat itself?
