Matteo Berrettini was considered one of the top favorites to win Wimbledon this year after a really good run on grass. The Italian sensation won back-to-back tournaments in Stuttgart and at the Queen’s Club. Unfortunately, Matteo tested positive for Coronavirus and therefore, he had to withdraw from Wimbledon.
This was his statement:
“I am heartbroken to announce that I need to withdraw from @wimbledon due to a positive COVID-19 test result.
I have had flu symptoms and been isolating the last few days. Despite symptoms not being severe, I decided it was important to take another test this morning to protect the health and safety of my fellow competitors and everyone else involved in the tournament.
I have no words to describe the extreme disappointed I feel. The dream is over for this year, but I will be back stronger.
Thank you for the support”
Matteo was in Rafael Nadal’s half in the main draw.

Now the world no.11, Berrettini played his last match on the 19th of June when he overcame world no.31 Filip Krajinovic 7-5 6-4 in the final in London to win his 7th career title.
This season the Italian has managed to achieve a compiled 18-6 record. The Italian has won 2 titles in 2022 in Stuttgart and in London.
