Strasbourg. Puig and Soler-Espinosa are hunting for their first title

Monica Puig and Silvia Soler-Espinosa have the wonderful opportunity to win their first career title in Strasbourg.

Monica Puig from Puerto Rico was long expected to be in this position after a great 2013 when she has made a couple of illustrious upsets.

In Strasbourg Puig was unseeded to reach the final without dropping a single set. The match against Madison Key in the semifinal was rather tough. Monica won the first set 7-5, but the she was 2-3 and 1 break down.  Then the Puerto Rican won 4 consecutive games to win the match 7-5 6-4. Match Stats

“It was a really tough match against Madison. I have a lot of respect for her. She’s one of the up-and-comers, like me and a bunch of other girls. She’s really aggressive and is always going for her shots. She has a really amazing serve. It was very tricky.” Said Puig

In the final Monica will play the qualifier Silvia Soler-Espinosa that has defeated Christina McHale 5-7 7-6 (7) 6-3 after saving 1 match point and having recovered a 1-5 deficit in the second set tiebreak. The match ended after 2 hours and 46 minutes. Match Stats
