The tournament in Madrid had 2 winners: Rafael Nadal and Kei Nishikori
Nadal
Rafa doesn’t seem to be at his very best any more on clay, but he has managed to win the title (with a lot of luck after Nishikori’s retirement). This allowed Nadal to defend the 1000 points he gained last year and keep a nice 1870pts gap between him and Djokovic. Still many points to defend though in the next few weeks in Rome (1000) and in Paris (2000)
Nishikori
Kei had a huge week in Madrid. Now he knows he can be hypercompetitive on clay after defeating Ferrer and being absolutely dominant against Nadal in the final. Only a nasty injury to his back refrain him from winning his first 1000ATP title. Reaching the final gave to Kei the access to the top10. Now world no.9 and going for more…
Gulbis
Mad Max Gulbis lost in the quarters against David Ferrer after defeating great players on his way such as Janowicz, an in-form Dolgopolov and an in-form Cilic. Ernests climbs 3 places to reach a career high world no.17.
Bautista-Agut
Robert had also a great week after reaching the semifinal in Madrid (defeated by Nadal). The Spaniard climbs 17 positions to reach the world no.28 spot (career high)
The biggest gainer
That was Julien Reister. The German won the Challenger 35 in Rome to climb 21 place and be ranked world no.21.
The Biggest loser
Pablo Andujar lost 28 places (now world no.64) after losing in the 1st round in Madrid. This was a hge loss of points as last year he has reached the semifinals in Madrid. (lost 6-0 6-4 to Nadal).
