Qualifier Dominic Thiem upsets Wawrinka in Madrid opener!

What a surprise! Well… not much…

Dominic Thiem is the hot name of the moment. The Austrian had all the potentiality to produce this upset. Dominic is ranked world no.70, but he has already demonstrated he can trade shots with the very best.

The match against Warwrinka didn’t really begin that well for the young Austrian that lost the opener 6-1. Then Dominic started to gain some confidence to grab a 3-0 lead in the second set (with a great hot shot) to win the second set 6-2. In the decider Thiem won the only and decisive break in the very last game. The final results was 1-6 6-2 6-4. Match Stats.

Thiem: I was in the zone

Dominic commented “I cannot really believe it. I was in this famous zone during the match. I was unbelievably concentrated. I think that’s how you can play these very good matches, if you are 100 per cent concentrated and 100 per cent out on the court.”

… his analysis on facebook

This was Dominic’ analysis on facebook “1:6, 6:2, 6:4 against Stan Wawrinka. In the beginning he was so much better than me. He played too fast and too good for me. But I got used to the speed and accuracy of his play in the second set and started playing better and better. A few rallys were really noble afterwards.  The crucial thing was my serve improving. But the most important thing is that i won. Maybe you remember I played well and lost against Tsonga in Vienna in autumn, I played well and lost against Murray in Rotterdam. But now i won. For sure I will lose a lot of matches against guys ranked much lower in the future. But now I know I CAN beat the best of the top guys. That is so important for me. That makes me so proud and is a mega push. Tomorrow a day off, I play again on thursday. Please keep your fingers crossed again for me. It worked soooo well today!!!  BAAAAMOSSS!!!  “
