Naomi Osaka is about to face Iga Swiatek in the Miami Open final on Saturday. The Polish player has just won Indian Wells and she is 1 step from conquering the so-called Sunshine Double (winning Indian Wells and Miami back to back in the same year).
During a recent press conference, Naomi admitted that playing in Indian Wells and Miami is extremely difficult after winning the title in the desert. Naomi recalled how challenging it was for her to play Serena Williams in the opening match in Miami back in 2018 after conquering Indian Wells. Naomi ended up winning that match 6-3 6-2.
Naomi commented:
“Yeah, I think it’s really amazing to see how far she’s come. I know when I won Indian Wells I was really dead, and then they made me play Serena in the first round. I was like, Whoa, dude.'”
Talking about Iga’s challenge, Naomi added:
“It’s incredible to see she [Swiatek] is still in this tournament and still fighting and going to be No. 1 soon or already. It’s cool. I think the WTA is definitely doing its thing.”
