Novak Djokovic wins the US Open after defeating Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets in the final.
The former world no.1 was again too good for the Argentine as he was already leading the Tower of Tandil 14-4 in the H2H matches before this final. The Serbian had to battle a bit only in the 2nd set when he managed to hold his serve in a monumental 8th game. After that, Nole had to keep his nerves at check only because Del Potro’s supporters were a bit “too noisy” in the “wrong moments”.
Eventually, Djokovic won with a relatively comfortable 6-3 7-6(4) 6-3 to win his 14th slam equaling the great Pete Sampras.

Soon after the match, Nole commented
“Pete Sampras is one of the biggest legends ever to play the game. He was my childhood idol. He was someone I was looking up to. The first actually thing I saw related to tennis on the TV was his first or second Wimbledon championship. That inspired me to start playing tennis.
There is a lot of significance of me being now shoulder to shoulder in terms of Grand Slam wins with him. It’s truly incredible when you think about it. I watched him win one of his first Wimbledon championships, and I grew up playing and thinking that one day I’ll be able to do what he does. To actually be here, it’s a dream come true.”
After this title, Djokovic is no.2 in the years to date rankings with a gap of only 1,035pts between him s a Nadal. This means that the Serbian can end the season at the top spot of the rankings!
